NEW 'BORROW OR BUY' BOOK CLUB

This is a different fund-raising venture for St. George's.  Church members and friends are invited, for a donation of just £1.00, either to borrow or buy one of the paper-back books on the bookshelf which stands near the piano next to the Anderson Room door.  Any new good quality books - fiction or non-fiction - can be left in a bag (marked for Gillian Irvine) in the Anderson Room.

 ST. GEORGE'S OUTDOOR BOWLS - SUMMER 2011

During the Summer, the outdoor section of the Club managed to win a few matches in the First Division of Morpeth's ‘Little League’ and therefore assured their position in the upper division for another season.  A number of our members did well in the various Morpeth Bowls Club competitions: one won the Four Wood Handicap competition while another (with his partner of course) won the George Ayers Pairs competition.  Two others managed to reach finals of competitions: one reached the final of the F. Murray Trophy (known as the Captain’s Prize) while another reached the final of the Robert Wood Rosebowl (better known as ‘The Novice’s) competition.  Unfortunately both lost in the final.   There were also other good performances in the Two-Wood Handicap and Novice’s competitions with members reaching the semi-finals of these events.

CHARITY CHRISTMAS CARD SALE

The Charity Christmas Card sale, which was held in St. George's Church Hall on the morning of Saturday 15th November raised the grand sum of £1020 for the thirteen charities that took part in the event.  Sales of teas, coffees and church cards raised a further £172 for church funds.

MANAGERS' NEW YEAR COFFEE MORNING - 14 JANUARY 2012

An early Annual St. George's fundraising event is the Managers' New Year Coffee Morning.  Apart from refreshments, tere was a large bric-a-brac stall, which included a number of very good quality but unwanted Christmas presents, a home produce stall, a book and greetings cards stall and this year, the St. George's Evening Carpet Bowls Club ran a bottle stall.  Altogether, the sum of £527 was raised for the benefit of church funds.

NORTHERN SYNOD CARPET BOWLS - 11th FEBRUARY 2012

The Northern Synod Carpet Bowls tournament was held at Wideopen URC on Saturday 11th February, attended by twelve teams representing the U.R.C. churches from Warkworth. Alnwick, Felton. RSM Newcastle, Newbiggin, Forest Hall and Ashington.  Morpeth St. George’s entered two teams of four. Both teams experienced a degree of difficulty in adjusting to the speed of the Wideopen carpets which were much ‘faster’ and of a different make from those that they were used to.  Consequently neither St. George's team managed to progress beyond the ‘round-robin’ stages of the competition although the ‘A’ team won two of their three games and the ‘B’ team won one and only narrowly lost the two others.  The trophy was eventually won by our hosts, Wideopen, who had entered a scratch team to take the place of last minute absentees, Rothbury.  Welcome refreshments were provided and at least the St. George’s representatives took home a small selection of the raffle prizes after another very enjoyable day.
